DALLAS – Dallas police chief David Brown told the Dallas City Council’s Public Safety Committee that homicides are up 86% this year and violent crimes are up 22%. In an effort to reduce the crime rate, Chief Brown is moving 600 officers who currently work in the day, to overnight shifts when most crimes occur. The Black Police Officer’s Organization, has called for Chief Brown to step down. Chief Brown says, “Now is not the time for union tactics. I serve at the pleasure of the Dallas City Manager and will continue to serve the people of Dallas.” As part of the changes, 96 officers will be rounding up people who have domestic violence warrant, and 72 officers will be serving warrants on drug offenders. Chief Brown says most of the homicides this year have been drug and domestic violence killings.
