DENTON (WBAP/KLIF News) – A boy who has been missing since his mother’s murder has been found and reunited with his family, according to Denton Police.
Ricardo “Alek” Lara was four-years-old when investigators say his father, Ricardo Martinez, killed Maria Isabel Romero Medina, 27, in Dec. 2014. “She didn’t want to continue their relationship any longer,” said Officer Shane Kizer. “He went to her work at Sanchez Insurance on East McKinney. He assaulted her and killed her, and then he fled with the child to Mexico.”
Kizer said the boy was found Tuesday and is in good health.
Martinez has been indicted by a grand jury on one count of murder. He is currently in the custody of Mexican police and will be brought back to the United States. “The extradition process has begun and can be lengthy. We have no estimate of his return date,” the police department said in a news release. Kizer said prosecutors have waived the death penalty option in order to get Martinez returned.
“Our number one goal was to locate the child and bring him back. His safety was our priority. Second to that, and several steps behind, is that we want to see justice brought forth for Maria and her family. We hope that is going to happen when we are successful in the extradition process.”
