DENTON (WBAP/KLIF)- As tensions between the U.S. and Iran continue, rumors are circulating about an upcoming military draft.
The U.S. Army Recruiting Command and the Selected Services are quashing these claims. The selected services tweeted that it’s not contacting anyone regarding a draft and to disregard any texts about it. University of North Texas Political Science Professor Kimi King weighs in. She said this is stemmed from the conflict in the Middle East, and people are concerned about another World War. “As of a result of everything that’s going on, we may have to increase troop strength…I think that’s what’s contributing to everyone’s concern,” said King. “There will always be people looking to take advantage of chaos that occurs and I think that’s where you can attribute much of this,” she said. Just days after the U.S. Airstrike that killed Iranian General Qasem Soliemani, the Selective Service System’s website crashed. The Selective Service Tweeted Friday: “Due to the spread of misinformation, our website is experiencing high traffic volumes at this time. If you are attempting to register or verify registration, please check back later today as we are working to resolve this issue.”
Since then, they have stressed that these messages are not real and is conducting business as usual. The authority to draft men ran out in 1973 and Congress would have to pass a measure and the president would need to sign it into law. “In the event that a national emergency necessitates a draft, Congress and the President would need to pass official legislation to authorize a draft,” The Selective Service Posted on Facebook.
Fact check: The @USArmy is NOT contacting anyone regarding the draft.
Text messages currently circulating are false and are not official Army communications.
