GRAPEVINE (WBAP/KLIF) – As many as four teenagers are facing charges after a loaded gun was found inside Grapevine High School Friday.
According to the Grapevine Police Department, a student reported a disturbing photo on snapchat of the teen’s on campus.
“It was showing somebody inside the campus with a gun in their waistband,” Amanda McNew with Grapevine PD said.
Police responded and eventually found the teens in the picture.
“We found everyone inside the campus and the gun was loaded inside a backpack,” said McNew.
Police are now investigating what the teen’s intentions were and the teen who reported the social media post is being praised as a hero.
Below is a statement released by Grapevine High School:
GCISD families,
This afternoon, a student posted an image on Snapchat of an individual with a gun in his waistband in the Grapevine High School cafeteria. The campus was placed into a lockdown while police searched the building. During this time, everyone in the building was behind locked doors. Additionally, Timberline Elementary, Cross Timbers Middle School and the Swim Center were placed in precautionary lockouts due to their proximity to GHS. Police conducted a thorough sweep of the building and all suspects were found and detained. One of the suspects detained is not a GHS student. The gun was found and secured by officers.
We have been notified by officers the suspects will be charged with terroristic threat, criminal trespass and possession of a firearm on school property. We cannot release any information regarding the GHS students’ identities as that would be a violation of the Family Education Rights to Privacy Act.
Once the image was posted on Snapchat, a student immediately notified a teacher and administrator, and swift action was taken to ensure the safety of our students and staff. Simultaneously, a different student was sharing the information with the GHS School Resource Officer. We continually encourage our students that if they see something, to say something, and this is why that is so important. I want to thank the brave students who brought this to the attention of GHS staff. I also want to thank the Grapevine and Colleyville Police Departments for their swift responsiveness this afternoon.
Additional counseling support was offered this afternoon for students who requested it, and it will also be available on Monday. I would like to encourage you to have a conversation with your student this weekend regarding the importance of working together to help ensure the safety of everyone in GCISD.
