Irving Police Department Changes Tattoo Policy to Boost Recruiting

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – A North Texas Police Department has changed its uniform policy to be more competitive in recruiting.

Officers in Irving are no longer required to cover up their tattoos. Irving Police Chief Jeff Spivey said that other departments in the metroplex have also changed  tattoo policies.

“If I’m a recruit with a tattoo and I’m going to be forced to wear a long sleeve shirt when it’s 105 degrees in Irving but I don’t have to when it’s 105 degrees in Fort Worth then I’m going to tend to want to work in Fort Worth.”

Officers in Grapevine, Fort worth, and Southlake can all show their tattoos. Officers in Frisco can temporarily show their tattoos during a trial period.

“I haven’t received any negative comments or anything,” said an Irving Patrol Officer. “I usually have people tell me that’s really cool or ask where I got it done.”

Irving PD has seen an increase in the number of Officers getting tattoos since the policy changed.
