City of Dallas Tell Bike-Share Companies to Clean Up Their Act

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The City of Dallas put bike share companies on notice to clean up their act by February 9th or the city will do it for them.

City Manager T.C. Broadnax sent a letter to the five companies, such as Lyme and Ofo, that operate in Dallas… telling them if they don’t meet the deadline, the city will start removing bikes on sidewalks and trails that it feels are obstructions or hazards.

Broadnax wants bikes to be relocated away from sidewalks less than 10 feet wide and all sidewalk curb ramps.

Bikes are also to be removed from turf, landscaping and other improved surfaces.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings told our sister station 13-10 The Ticket  the city wanted to evaluate how the bikes fit in Dallas after about six months…but that changed.

“I think we got through about three or four months and we got through a few issues. I am so glad that the city manager stepped up,” he said.

Residents across the city have voiced their frustrations with the increase in clutter on roadways and trails.

Tara Duffy regularly walks her dog along the Katy Trail in Uptown and said she’s noticed a major difference since the ride-share companies came to town.

“They’re just clustered all over the place and it actually gets in the way of the sidewalk,” she said.

Duffy said she’s that happy that the city has stepped up to the plate to clean up the mess.

“I noticed I am getting better. We were keeping them stood up and neater and when the bad weather came through there was definitely a lapse in that,” she said.

The city estimates that there are around 20,000 ride-share bikes in Dallas.
