ARLINGTON (WBAP & KLIF News) — Starting this week, the City of Arlington will be using more than $200,000 of state funds to help the homeless.
The $220,509 in funds came from the Texas Department of Housing and Community affairs and will go toward the city’s Homeless Housing and Services Program. Mayor Jeff Williams says the city just wants to do its part in what Arlington residents have already started.
“Our non-profits and churches have taken a leadership role in trying to address this,” Williams said of the city’s homeless population. “We want to be a convener and facilitator to make that happen.”
The city says the money will primarily be used for preventing those faced with eviction from becoming homeless. Those in need of the funds can apply for assistance through the HHSP.
The city expects to help around 40 households between now and August.
“No other city can look at what has happened in Mission Arlington and Arlington Life Shelter and compare to the successes that we’ve had in all of our city,” Williams said.
